Vermont based songwriter Grace Potter put forth a fearless look into the transformative moments that keep us alive in her latest single “Good Time.”
Potter set out from Vermont on a cross country tour: a calling to travel the great Route 66. The journey gave Potter a “life-saving reconnection with her most unbridled self,” as she battled depression and worked to heal from a devastating miscarriage.
Grace Potter records Mother Road in Nashville
Through multiple trips across the country, Potter penned the songs for Mother Road and recording dates were scheduled in Nashville.
“At first, I Thought of what I was doing as escapism, and I felt ashamed of that. But eventually I realized I was giving myself permission to do what needed to be done for me to get better,” Potter said in an official press release. “At the heart of it is my journey to self-reliance and a sense of worthiness.”
A cartoon image of Hurricane’s Cafe opens the video. A vintage television plays a newsreel style vignette for “The Many Lives and Deaths of Lady Vagabond.” The television shatters and you’re transported into the diner.
“Writing that song, I was thinking about all the times when there were no boundaries between me and the world at large,” Potter said. “As you get older there’s this expectation that you need to fall in line, that you can’t keep living in a fantasy your whole life. But I don’t know about that. Maybe we can.”
Lola Vasquez is the character portrayed in “Good Time,” a Janis Joplin style grooving song with electric piano and sharp lead guitar. There’s even a dance breakdown in the middle that reminds us of a 1980s nightclub dance track.
“Your music is so inspiring Grace. The world is a better place with you in it,” Lisa Dunn commented on the Youtube video.
The single has stayed in the top 20 of the Americana Music Association’s singles chart. The video has positive vibe with a creative design and fun costumes.
