A vintage-style suitcase turntable is spinning in the lyric video for “Wondering Why,” the viral soul release from the Red Clay Strays that tops the Americana Music Association Singles Chart.
“She keeps on loving me, loves me the way I am,” Brandon Coleman sings, “she’s not just along for the ride, she’s my biggest fan.”
The Night Clubs of Mobile
The Red Clay Strays got their start in Mobile, Alabama and have connected to fans in the social media world with “Wondering Why” appearing behind user Instagram Reels.
“A year ago we couldn’t have told you we’d be right here,” Coleman said in an interview with WEGL, “it’s unknown. It’s God’s will man.”
Last year they went on tour with Elle King, who hit news feeds last week after an intoxicated, profanity laced performance for Dolly Parton’s birthday at the Ryman Auditorium, and have continued to command larger audiences through the success of “Wondering Why.”
“Everybody yelling at us to play it from the beginning of the show is kind of crazy, but it’s cool. I’m thankful for the recognition,” Coleman said in an interview with Billboard, “but I always have it in my mind that people [go] viral for a month or two, then the next thing comes along.”
“Wondering Why” is an excellent soul-style offering from a group that has been out in the dance halls for almost a decade. It gives us a taste of Blues Traveler and Chris Stapelton mixed with Sam Cooke. It has its hands in many different sub-cultures and really gives us a taste of what the Americana umbrella offers.
