Like Billy McClain, Charley Crockett is the last of his breed. In his new single “$10 Cowboy,” Crockett lets us know that being a cowboy singer isn’t all that much different from being a bronc rider. When we are first learning the ropes we constantly get bucked out the saddle, but before too long we’re “steady holdin’ on.”
Crockett paints an amazing picture here, that he nor any legend for that matter is infallible. That even legends in their perspective game have inhibitions that hold them back and that even the best of us get bucked off “a time or two.”
Crockett’s band The Blue Drifters are in top fighting shape after being on the road 200 days out of the year. They are superstars in their own right delivering an amazing performance on the track. The song is co-written and produced by none other than Billy Horton who has one of the most brilliant minds in country music today.
“$10 cowboy” is the first round, and like a prize fighter, it feels like Crockett is finding his distance, measuring us with his jab. In his next release I anticipate him setting a trap to then knock us clean out with the release of the album. I’m excited to see how the fight plays out for the people’s champion of country music, The “$10 Dollar Cowboy,” Charley Crockett.
