Andy Thomas gives us a country duet that brings us back to the golden era- the beautiful harmonies, the tremolo guitar, the sing-along vibes…
South Florida
“There’s not really one,” Thomas said about the country scene in Boynton Beach, Florida, where he’s resting between tours. “Nice weather and palm trees.”
Andy grew up near Richmond, Virginia where he picked up the guitar from his father.
“I never put it down,” Thomas said about his Yamaha strat. “My brother picked up drums and my dad switched over to bass and we just had a family band from like that young. I just always knew since then that I wanted to be doing music, and just involved myself with any kind of musical thing whether it was in school or after school.”
Thomas started singing a bit later when he was forming bands with high school friends. He started working with a vocal coach and then moved into live performances at local clubs with the family band, other projects with friends and another band with his brother, who’s now an event coordinator in the music business.
Highway Junkie
Before his debut release, Thomas has been touring the country with The Trongone Band and Yarn.
“This is my first record,” Thomas said, “first thing under my own name. It really came together nicely. Dave Schools produced the record and he’s also a Richmond native so we kind of brought it all home to record the record there. Even down to the single, Dori is from Galax- so a lot of Virginia love in this one.”
He describes his record as “somewhere between “Skynyrd and Sturgill.” Thomas wrote the single as a Christmas gift to his girlfriend. It’s a standout that shows he’s ready to be pushing music under his own name.
“I was always into anything with a twang,” Thomas said, “anything that had soul and some kind of guitar driven thing.”
Now he’s getting out on the road under his name for the first time.
“I finally just sold my work truck for a sprinter van, so I’m in it now,” Thomas joked. “I don’t have a job anymore or a personal vehicle… full plunge into this music career, this path I’m on.”
Finding His Path
Thomas is also a voice for sober artists. He’s hitting a thousand days as the record is rolling out.
“I just wasn’t on the right path,” Thomas said. “I had never given it to myself to one experience life, but even more than that I never gave music a real try. I needed to make a lot of changes, but that’s where it needed to start, so I just decided to walk away from it all and never look back. It’s the best thing I ever did.”
Thomas has an album release show tomorrow back in Richmond. If you’re in the area, throw him some support as he embarks on this leap of faith. His music is truly special, and he’s a positive light out there for all aspiring artists to learn from.
