News broke this morning that Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died.

The band’s manager Robert Hays confirmed that Harwell had passed away from acute liver failure in his Boise, Idaho home.

“Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle,” Hayes said in a statement released to the press. “Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.”

Harwell Retires from Smash Mouth

Harwell retired from touring two years ago amid worsening health conditions.

“Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream. To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with,” Harwell said to TMZ.

Smash Mouth Nominated for a Grammy

Harwell was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal category for “All Star” and sold over ten million albums while performing with Smash Mouth.

Harwell was introduced to multiple generations from the 1999 hit ‘All Star” to The Monkees’ “I’m a Believer” cover in the Shrek animated hit.
