“I’m always writing,” Lead Singer for Loose Screws and Rusty Hearts EZ Maldonado said. “Right now as you called I had my journal out.”
Their new EP Cold, a stripped down and emotional offering featuring Violinist Sarah Stollak, takes a lot of its inspiration from the environment and the decision to ban data centers from San Marcos.
“The EP for me was very special,” Maldonado said. “This EP has a lot of references to the river in San Marcos. The river is the photo and the backdrop for a lot of it.”
Cold
“I was having a kind of sad Christmas,” Maldonado said about the opening track. “It’s weird being divorced and not having a family and just kind of having to do new things. My family was out in Dallas and I didn’t really have a way to get up there. Sometimes I just like to take holidays by myself.”
Maldonado met a friend at the local river park and brought along his guitar.
“We were literally the only people there,” Maldonado said. His friend started free styling as the guitar played and the idea of a love story started to form. It speaks of the wild rice that floats along the river banks and the idea of life flowing into one’s destiny.
“Cold is my love song to the river,” Maldonado said.
Welcome Home
“Welcome Home” tells an experience from the Kerrville Folk Festival in the Hill Country and “Seed in the Desert” gives a story of lost love in Terlingua.
“The first time I went to Terlingua it actually rained,” Maldonado said. “I guess rain comes… I guess love comes… I guess water comes on its own damn time.”
